How often should you change your filters? There is no single right answer to the question but there is plenty of ways to get the right answer for your situation. I will preface this and say that I think airflow calculations need to be done and a HVAC professional consulted to get the best results for your situation. First would be the filter thickness: 1" filters generally last from 1-3 months 2" filters generally last from 3-6 months 4" filters generally last from 6-12 months If you have pets or even just a full household it will lower the lifespan of the filter as it will collect dust and debris at a much higher rate. Not only will it last longer but a thicker filter is more important on a bigger system as it allows more airflow. Second would be MERV rating: Less then 8: Only grab the largest particles. Only recommended if airflow is an issue on a system trying to keep going on its last leg. 8-12: Gold standard and what we most recommend for our customers. It is cheaper to replace and filters a good portion of particles out of the air. 13+: Great for air quality, bad for furnaces. It can help with allergies or immune issues to a degree but it clogs faster and reduces airflow to the furnace. Higher MERV and thinner filters need to be changed more often, while lower MERV and thicker filters need to be changed less often. Higher MERV and thickness will increase the price which is certainly something to consider. The table below is a very generic EXAMPLE to give an idea of how these filter selections effect how often you change them. I would advice to error on the side of caution and change it more often as your system is much more expensive then a filter. Poor airflow WILL kill it faster.
